Tesla Home Charging Requirements in California: What You Need To Know

Photon Brothers Tesla Charger

California has been at the forefront of electric vehicle adaptation. With an extensive network of public charging stations, California encourages residents to consider EVs as a viable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional combustion engine vehicles. Additionally, per the mandatory building standards from the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), new homes being built must be pre-wired for Level 2 electric vehicle charging. This is great news for EV owners purchasing a new construction home.

That said, if your existing home doesn’t have an EV charging station, there are some things to consider. Especially if you’re installing a Tesla charger (which, thankfully, can charge all vehicles– not just Tesla). In this article, we’ll run through the Tesla home charging requirements in California to help you navigate the installation process.

Tesla Charging Options

Tesla offers Level 1 and Level 2 charging plus a Supercharger designed for those with faster charging requirements. Most home charging solutions, however, are Level 1 or Level 2 options. Let’s look at both to see what’s best for you.

Level 1 Charging (120V)

Level 1 charging is the slowest way to charge your Tesla, but it works well for those who only travel 40 to 50 miles daily and can charge their EVs overnight. The charging cables come with a plug that fits into standard 120-volt outlets, so you don’t need special infrastructure to charge your EV.

Level 2 Charging (240V)

Level 2 charging requires a 240-volt electrical outlet plus a charging station, also known as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). This type of charging requires a Tesla or standard J1772 connector that plugs into your EV directly or via an adapter.

Tesla Wall Connector Installation Requirements

Some requirements are necessary to install a Tesla Wall Connector to ensure proper home charging. Read on to learn how to set up your own EV charging station at home.

Electrical Panel Capacity

Installing a Tesla Wall Connector requires sufficient electrical capacity — typically a 60-amp circuit to optimize charging — plus a dedicated circuit. Remember that the exact requirements may vary, depending on the Tesla you purchase.

Professional Installation

Tesla Wall Connectors aren’t something you can install yourself, but Photon Brother’s qualified team of licensed electricians and premier certified installers can handle the task. We offer a 4‑year craftsmanship warranty on all EV home charger installations.

Wall Connector Location

Your Tesla Wall Connector must be mounted in a location that’s easily accessible to your vehicle. For the best results, Photon Brother’s in-house electricians typically mount your wall connector on a solid surface that’s most convenient to your car, such as on a garage wall. Our electricians will also try to install it close to a home’s electrical panel to reduce additional conduit costs.

Tesla Charging Cable Length

Keep in mind that the longer the charging cable length, the longer the charging times and less energy efficiency. A thicker cable gauge can sometimes make up for this if you need more length to reach your charger, but in most instances, the shorter the cable, the better.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Wi-Fi connectivity lets your Tesla Wall Connector receive over-the-air updates for safer operation. Tesla owners typically set up their accounts before Wall Connector installation, then log in to their accounts once they’re ready to use the home charging unit.

Charging at Different Utility Rates

The size of your Tesla or EV battery plus the cost of electricity in your area determine the price you pay to charge your car. Utilities often have time-of-use (TOU) rates that let you more economically charge your EV at home during off-peak hours to reduce costs. As of September 23, California’s electricity costs per kilowatt hour run between 26 and 54 cents when charging at home. By contrast, public charging costs for Level 2 run around $1.50 per hour to 26 cents per minute for fast charging.

Incentives and Rebates for Home Charging

The Electrify Your Ride” program by Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) offers residents of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties up to $2,400 in rebates for installing a Level 2 EV charger. This program is designed to make home charging installations more accessible and affordable, contributing to California’s goal of sustainable transportation. It includes $400 for the charger and up to $2,000 for wiring and installation, with Photon Brothers ready to assist in both the installation and the rebate application process. This local rebate is a great starting point for homeowners transitioning to electric vehicles.

California offers rebates of up to $6,000 for each Level 2 charger and up to $80K for each DC fast charger. These incentives are in addition to local rebates available through various towns and counties throughout the state. Discover rebates in your area of California by checking out the incentives available at California’s Drive Clean website.

In September 2023, California hit a milestone for EV charging by surpassing 10,000 super-charging stations added to the state’s public charging infrastructure. California legislation also promotes the electrification of transportation through public and private partnerships.

Among those partnerships, Communities in Charge has reserved almost $30 million in funding and seeks to distribute $38 million more as of November 2023. Funded by the California Energy Commission, this CALSTART-managed initiative provides incentives for Tesla Level 2 chargers to help offset the installation costs. Incentives are up to $3,500. Visit their website and click on Who may apply?” to learn more about eligibility requirements.
