Power Levels and Charging Speeds

More power means faster charging when it comes to a Tesla charging station and most other charging options. There are three basic options when it comes to charging your EV at home: Using a standard wall outlet (120V), using an appliance outlet (240V), or installing a specialized charging station (Supercharger).

Level 1 Charging (120V)

When plugging into a standard wall outlet, expect to get about 2 to 3 miles of range per hour of plugin time. If you don’t do much driving, you may be able to keep your EV on the road with this option, but to fill up a Tesla 3 with a standard 333-mile range, it would take more than four and a half days of constant charging with a 120V outlet.

Level 2 Charging (240V)

An appliance outlet that delivers 240 volts can give the same Tesla up to 25 miles of range per charging hour, which means a full battery in 10 hours or so. That’s significantly faster than a standard outlet and would eliminate the need for away-from-home charging for most drivers.

Level 3 Charging (Supercharger)

Go from 0 to full in about an hour with a Supercharger. These ultra-fast charging stations give you up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes. However, you can’t install a Supercharger at home, and since constant use would degrade the battery, you wouldn’t want to.

Choosing the Right Tesla Home Charging Option

Deciding on a Tesla home charging option often depends on your driving habits and budget, along with the number of EVs you currently own and operate.

Standard Wall Outlet (Level 1)

A standard wall outlet is not recommended. While you can trickle charge occasionally to limp into a fast charging station, trying to keep enough charge to run errands or commute to work is a challenge at only 2 to 3 miles per hour.

Home Charging Station (Level 2)

With a home charging station, you get the electric equivalent of a full tank of gas every morning. That’s a lot of miles to run through every day, which you probably won’t use unless you have a very travel-intensive job.

Tesla Wall Connector Installation

Installing a Tesla wall connector is a solid choice for any EV owner since it allows easy connection and charging at home. These connectors plug into 240V outlets and allow you to plug into the car without needing a mobile charger.
